If everyone who was abused became an abuser, we would all be abusers by now. Clearly, not everyone who has been abused becomes an abuser. Abuse is a choice, not a destiny.

United Way of Central New Mexico, in concert with many organizations and companies, has created and distributed the Better Man advertising campaign as part of our commitment to community education around the issue of family violence. Our mission is to change the culture in our community to eliminate tolerance for family violence. It is our hope that viewers of these ads will be inspired to think about this issue differently. Further, we hope that different thoughts will lead to different actions by all members of our community. Special thanks go to Media United Companies who have sponsored the Better Man ad campaign by donating advertising space.

The website is designed to be a community wide site offering information and resources to victims, batterers and others. The success of this site will depend on the willingness of others to that help people understand this issue and offers resources that will help them.

If you have information which you think would improve this site, . All costs for the maintenance of this site are covered by Corporate Cornerstone Companies as part of their support for UWCNM’s Initiative Against Family Violence.

Resources and Information About Family Violence

Family Violence Defined: Please note that we use the term “family violence” purposely on this website. Any family member can be a victim of abuse, women, men, boys, girls, as well as elder women and men. Even pets are sometimes abused. So to be as inclusive as we can, we use the term family violence.

The statistics show that the majority of adult victims are women. In preparing the information on this website, we have used the terms that reflect those statistics. However, we feel it is important to say that men are also included as victims in our definition of family violence. Our definition of family also includes people who live as a family, regardless of the legal nature of their relationship.
